At Exploris we believe that students learn reading, writing, speaking, and listening by actually engaging these activities. Our students spend time at school engaged in literacy activities. They read, write, speak, and listen every day.
Exploris uses the Common Core State Standards for Language Arts curriculum.

40 Book Challenge!
We have spent the last few weeks learning about various genre types for books. Students have studied and identified books in the following genres:
Fictional: Traditional Literature (including classics), Fantasy, Science Fiction, Realistic Fiction, Historical Fiction, Mystery
Non-Fiction: Autobiographical, Biographical, Memoir, Informational
Other: Poetry, Graphic Novels and Comics
We have 30 minutes of sustained independent reading and 30 minutes of read aloud during EACH school day. Students are learning to track their reading and how to respond to literature. Over the next few weeks, teachers will begin conferencing with each student to talk about what they are reading, what they like to read, what causes them to abandon a book, when is a good time to abandon a book and when is a good time to stick with a book and see what happens and so much more.
Our challenge, based on The Book Whisperer by Donalyn Miller, is to inspire each child to read 40 books, which they choose, by the end of the school year! We are very excited about this reading adventure and all the teachers are putting themselves to the 40 Book Challenge right along with the students!
